AMES, Iowa -- A metallurgist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory has been recently elected Chairman of the Board of Governors of Acta Metallurgica, Inc.
Karl Gschneidner, Jr., who is also an Anson Marston Distinguished Professor in Iowa State University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, began a three-year term as chairman in February. Acta Metallurgica owns and publishes three international journals in the materials field, Acta Materialia, Scripta Materialia and NanoStructured Materials, and hosts major international materials conferences every year. Acta also presents six awards annually in the materials research field: the Acta Metallurgica Gold Medal for outstanding scientific and technical contributions to the materials community; the J. Herbert Holloman Award for contributions to interaction between materials technology and societal concerns; and an Outstanding Paper Award for each journal.
Gschneidner, a member of the board since 1967, is former director of ISU's Center for Rare Earths and Magnetics (formerly the Rare-earth Information Center) and performs research on rare earth magnetic materials at Ames Lab.
Ames Laboratory is operated for the DOE by ISU. The Laboratory conducts research in various areas of national concern, including energy resources, high performance computing, environmental cleanup and restoration, and the synthesis and study of new materials.
