Ames, Iowa -- Valley High of West Des Moines shined at the 1997 Ames Lab/IPRT High School Science Bowl, going undefeated throughout the entire competition to place first in a field of 37 schools. The talented team consisted of students Paco Jain (captain), Adrienne Clark, Chris Rotzien, Mikhail Seregine and Drew Volker. The coach for the winning Valley team was Marge Clark.
The quiz-bowl style competition was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University's (ISU) Institute for Physical Research and Technology (IPRT). In addition, this year's Science Bowl also received significant support from Orlin and Onnolee Trapp, friends and alumni of ISU, who recognize the importance of science education to Iowa's future.
Valley High beat Mount Pleasant High School by a score of 124-22 in the championship round to win the tournament that was held in Ames Laboratory and ISU buildings. Third place went to Ames High.
Coach Marge Clark says the Valley team members prepared for their successful showing by getting together and practicing two hours a week since the beginning of January. "We would brainstorm on each of the subject areas," says Clark, "and we were fueled by Mountain Dew," she adds with a laugh.
Both Mount Pleasant High School and Ames High School received trophies for their outstanding efforts. Valley High School also received a trophy and will travel to Washington, D.C., to compete in the DOE's National Science Bowl finals in May. While in Washington, the Valley team will have the opportunity to tour various historical sites and museums.
Ames Laboratory is operated for the DOE by ISU. The Lab conducts research into various areas of national concern, including energy resources, high-performance computing, environmental cleanup and restoration, and synthesis and study of new materials
