Radiation Tracking System (RTRAK)for Delineating Contamination in Soils
This project implements and deploys a suite of proven EM-50 sponsored technologies that, taken together: provide a turn-key solution to the problem of discerning between contaminated and uncontaminated soils in support of a soil remedial action involving radionuclides; and allow this discernment to take place 'on the fly' as part of an overall Adaptive Sampling and Analysis Program (ASAP) strategy.
No image. Developers:
•  FEMP, ANL, INEEL, DOE-EML
Applications:
•  Applicable at any DOE site with radionuclide contamination in shallow soils, especially where varying patterns of 'hot spots' and below-regulatory-concern soils occur (e.g. Rocky Flats, Nevada Test Site, Fernald, Mound)
Benefits:
•  Cost Benefits Expected: Replaces time/labor intensive soil sampling and analysis programs. Lowers final disposal cost by reducing waste volumes
•  Expected to significantly Lower Risks: Expected to reduce secondary waste generation and overall remediation costs
Status:
•  Deployment began in FY98 at Fernald Environmental Management Project (FEMP) in Fernald, OH with Portable Hi-Purity Germanium Detectors, and RSS Software for Soil Excavation Control technologies; deployments will continue into FY99
•  FY99 Fernald deployments include Area 2, Phase III; Area 8, Phase III; and Area 9, Phase I
•  To be deployed in FY00 in conjunction with other delineating contamination in soils technologies (OST #s 2157 and 2362).
•  Continuing work includes developing qualification and implementation programs for real-time applications at other sites and additional qualificiation work targeting the use of real-time technologies in support of site certification in FY00
•  Commercially available in FY98
