Project Overview

This activity funds the design and fabrication of standard waste box (SWB) and crate surrogates. These surrogates are needed to evaluate, calibrate, and refine neutron and gamma ray based crate/box assay systems. These systems will be used to characterize both TRU and low-level wastes. In FY-99, two surrogates were fabricated to support the development of two assay systems for Rocky Flats; a B-25 wet combustible surrogate and a B-25 dry combustible surrogate. In FY-00, 4 surrogates were designed and fabricated: 2 SWB surrogate configuration boxes with 4 surrogate matrix inserts, 2 combustibles, and 2 metals. In FY-01, the design and fabrication of 2 surrogates to support the evaluation of box assay systems in the PDP, TRU and LLW waste programs is planned; 1 SWB type high density matrix (soil, concrete rubble, blacktop type) 1 B-25 type high density surrogate to support Rocky Flats and Hanford needs.
