Project Overview

The objective of this project is to apply high-pressure gamma-ray spectrometer technology to a probe that is compatible with a cone penetrometer (CPT) system for in-situ characterization of radioactive waste sites. The probe is intended as an improved, direct replacement for currently used sodium iodide detectors, which suffer from energy resolution limitations that make it very difficult to resolve individual radioactive species in a mixed contaminant environment. Xenon spectrometers also avoid the operational issues associated with solid-state charge conversion detectors, such as germanium, which requires active cooling within the rigid constraints of a CPT probe.
