AMES LAB SCIENTIST WINS ONE OF 23 PHYSICS AWARDS GIVEN WORLDWIDE

Ruslan Prozorov Receives Sloan Research Fellowship

AMES, Iowa – Ruslan Prozorov, an associate scientist at the U. S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory and an Iowa State University assistant professor of physics, has been awarded a 2006 Sloan Research Fellowship. The prestigious awards are intended to enhance the careers of the very best young faculty members in specified fields of science. Prozorov is one of only 23 scientists worldwide to receive a 2006 Sloan Research Fellowship in the field of physics.
The Sloan Research Fellowship was established in 1955 to provide support and recognition to early-career scientists and scholars who were endeavoring to set up laboratories and establish their independent research projects with little or no outside support. Currently, a total of 116 fellowships are awarded annually in seven fields: chemistry (23), computational and evolutionary molecular biology (12), computer science (14), economics (8), mathematics (20), neuroscience (16), and physics (23).
Prozorov's research involves experimental studies of novel superconducting and magnetic materials at low temperatures. Since coming to Ames Laboratory and Iowa State from the University of South Carolina less than a year ago, Prozorov has established a new low-temperature facility at Ames Lab that is among only a handful in the entire United States with some unique experimental techniques.
The Sloan Research Fellowship will provide Prozorov with $45,000 over a two-year period, which he may use to support any activity directly related to his research.
Ames Laboratory is operated for the DOE by Iowa State University. The Lab conducts research into various areas of national concern, including energy resources, high-speed computer design, environmental cleanup and restoration, and the synthesis and study of new materials.
