The Fossil Energy Program of the
Ames Laboratory was established in 1977. One of thirteen programs within this Department of Energy National
Laboratory, the Fossil Energy program works within the guidelines of the National Energy Strategy, to provide research support for the development of clean coal technologies, and to facilitate implementation of the Clean Air Act. The Fossil Energy program is closely associated with the
Center for Coal and the Environment
at Iowa State University.
Current projects, detailed below, include the development of analytical and on-line instrumentation, and improved processes and techniques to facilitate the optimization and implementation of new coal utilization technologies; coal waste characterization and utilization studies; and research in the separation of coal and mineral impurities.
The scope of research effort in the Fossil Energy Program ranges from small developmental projects funded for several
thousand dollars and completed in less than a year to large multi-disciplinary projects funded for more than a million dollars
and requiring several years to complete. The average project requires the efforts of about two full time scientists
and costs about $100,000 for a year's effort.
The Fossil Energy Program can collaborate with industry, research organizations, universities and other educational
and scientific institutions to address research issues that are encompassed in our Department of Energy mission. We can share specialized national laboratory facilities, and arrange for scientists from your organization to work on-site here in Ames on collaborative research efforts. We can work with you to prepare and submit effective proposals and can work with you to negotiate appropriate confidentiality and intellectual property agreements.
