Lograsso named interim Deputy Director
Thomas Lograsso has been named Interim Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory. The appointment is for one year.
Lograsso replaces Bruce Harmon, who stepped down from the position of Ames Laboratory Deputy Director on September 1 to return to research and teaching at Ames Lab and Iowa State University. Harmon had been the Deputy Director for 17 years.

Research:
Reclaiming rare earths | Ames Laboratory researchers are working to more effectively remove the neodymium, a rare earth element, from the mix of other materials in a magnet. Initial results show recycled materials maintain the properties that make rare-earth magnets useful. The process uses magnesium to remove neodymium and other rare earths from magnet scrap.

Discovering the keys to improved biofuel catalysts | Scientists at the Ames Laboratory are learning more about how nano-scale catalytic systems work, and their research could be the key to improved processes for refining biofuels and producing other chemicals. |

Kramer named DMSE assistant director | Matthew Kramer has been named Assistant Director for the Division of Materials Science and Engineering effective October 1, 2012. As the Assistant DMSE Director, Kramer will be responsible for DSME White Paper and capital equipment solicitations/allocations, foreign travel management and reporting, Safety Walk-through Inspections, and Associateship Renewals.
