Using Eudora to Check Mail From an External Network

This document covers setting Eudora 6.1 up to check an Ames Laboratory e-mail account from a non-AmesLab network. Note that while we set the SMTP host as mailhub.ameslab.gov, this will make it impossible to send mail to non-@ameslab.gov addresses. If you need to do this, use webmail or your own ISP's SMTP relay.

The changes to Eudora all take place in the control panel available under Tools->Options. Follow the screenshots below to enter the appropriate data:

Click on the "Getting Started" icon to enter the information below:

  1. "Real name:" Enter your name as you'd like it to appear on outgoing e-mails.
  2. "Return address:" Enter the e-mail address you'd like people to reply to.
  3. "Mail server (Incoming):" If you plan to use IMAP (leave messages on the server to view later/from elsewhere) enter imap.ameslab.gov, otherwise use pop.ameslab.gov.
  4. "Login name:" Enter your e-mail server username (usually the part of your e-mail address before the '@' symbol).
  5. "SMTP Server (Outgoing):" Set this to the e-mail server you'd like to use for outgoing messages. Remember, to send mail to people with addresses not ending in @ameslab.gov you must use your ISP's mail server for this!
  6. "Allow authentication" Leave this checked; if authentication is not required, Eudora will not prompt for it.

Click on the "Checking Mail" icon to enter the information below:

  1. "Secure Sockets when Receiving" Set to "If Available, STARTTLS" to enable encryption when it's available.

Click on the "Incoming Mail" icon to enter the information below (Note: the screen may look slightly different depending on whether IMAP or POP is selected):

  1. "Server configuration:" Select the account type matching the hostname your entered (IMAP for imap.ameslab.gov, POP for pop.ameslab.gov).
  2. "Authentication style:" This should be set to "Passwords".

Click on the "Sending Mail" icon to enter the information below:

  1. "Allow authentication" Leave this checked; if authentication is not required, Eudora will not prompt for it.
  2. "Secure Sockets when Sending" Set to "If Available, STARTTLS" to enable encryption when it's available.
