Using a client to access e-mail from an external network is similar to access from our internal network with the exception that mail relaying is not allowed. This means that to send e-mail to recipients with addresses not ending in @ameslab.gov requires the use of either webmail, ssh mail access, or your ISP's smtp server. We will therefore cover setting up a client to use mailhub.ameslab.gov as the SMTP server, but change this to your ISP server if you wish to send e-mail to others.
For specific client instructions, click below:
If another e-mail client is being used, the following information should be sufficient to configure it:
| Username: | For most people this is the part of your e-mail address prior to the '@' sign. |
| Account Type: | To leave mail on the server for reciept at the lab or viewing through webmail, choose IMAP; to download and remove mail from server, choose POP. |
| POP/IMAP Server: | pop.ameslab.gov or imap.ameslab.gov depending on Account Type. |
| ** SMTP Server: | mailhub.ameslab.gov for non-relaying mail (see first paragraph for more information.) |
| SSL/TLS Encryption: | Encrypt if available; we do offer this, so it should work, but this is also client specific, so if it causes problems just turn encryption off. |
