    The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Ames Laboratory will receive approximately $1.7 million as part of President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The funds are part of $1.2 billion announced by Secretary of Energy Steven Chu today from funding allocated under the Recovery Act to DOE’s Office of Science.

    Two Iowa State University undergraduates working with Ames Laboratory researchers were among the 23 ISU students who presented posters on their research at the Iowa State Capitol on March 9. Student Daniel Stoecklein, Lakeville, Minn., works with Ames Lab mentor physicist Ruslan Prozorov and Charles Fisher, Mount Auburn, works with Ames Lab scientist Scott Chumbley.

    Ed Yeung, senior chemist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory, has been selected to receive the American Chemical Society’s Division of Analytical Chemistry Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Analytical Chemistry.

    Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School of Dubuque edged Johnston Middle School to win the 2009 Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional Middle School Science Bowl here on Feb. 21. Roosevelt advances to the National Science Bowl, to be held April 30-May 5 in Washington, D.C. and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.

    Des Moines Central Academy defeated Home Schools of Eastern Iowa 56-22 to win the championship of 19th annual Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional High School Science Bowl here on Saturday, Jan. 31. Ames High School finished third and West Des Moines Valley (Team 1) fourth in the daylong science and mathematics quiz bowl.
