Stepping on a sample, particularly in high heels, is not something most researchers would do.  However, by applying pressure comparable to that generated under a stiletto heel, researchers discovered that the low temperature properties of an iron-arsenide-based superconductor where cobalt is substituted for some of the iron, Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2, can be changed from antiferromagnetic, to superconducting to non-magnetic in a highly controllable manner. This remarkable finding is a consequence of the extreme sensitivity of the various types of order to changes in pressure.  This is a unique case where the main states associated with iron-based superconductivity can all be accessed in a single sample by applying modest pressure.  This discovery allows for the careful study of how these states interact and may shed light on why and how the iron arsenide materials have such remarkable superconducting properties.

ImageThe latest issue of Ames Laboratory's science magazine -- Inquiry 2012, Issue 2 -- is now available in print form. The issue profiles several scientists as "Faces of The Ames Laboratory" and takes a look at how the Midwest Forensics Resource Center is leveraging basic scientific research to develop new methods for tying forensic evidence to crime scenes.

The cover of the issue is an image of Rob McQueeney, one of the scientists profiled, that is a mosaic of some 2,000 small images of people and research taking place at Ames Laboratory. Look closely and you may find yourself or your work. Other scientists profiled include Emily Smith, Aaron Bryden, Javier Vela, Ryan Ott, Karl Gschneidner, Tanya Prozorov, Ning Fang, and John Corbett.

Print copies of Inquiry 2012, Issue 2 can be found on the magazine racks on first floor TASF and in the lobby of the Directors' Office, or in 111 TASF. To view a pdf version of the magazine, click HERE. A web-based version will be posted in early January.

A German public television (ZDF/Arte) crew was at Ames Lab on Dec 10 to shoot footage about rare earths. The crew worked with Ames Lab's Bill McCallum to capture some of the Lab's ongoing rare-earth research. The show, "Rare Earths - The Treasure Hunters" will also include footage from Molycorp's rare-earth mining operation in Mountain Pass, Calif.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Holiday stress got you down?  Need a kick start into the New Year?  If so, you may want to contact Employee & Family Resources (EFR), your Employee Assistance Program.  All contact with EFR is strictly confidential.  Whether you need legal or financial help, assistance regarding elder care or just want to live better in general, EFR is ready to help.  This benefit is not just for you – it’s for your family members too!  Give them a call at (515) 244-6090 or (800) 327-4692 or (877) 542-6488 (TTY) or learn more at www.efr.org/eap.

Benefits

Your finalized benefit statement for 2013 will be available on AccessPlus beginning January 11, 2013.  To access AccessPlus, go to https://accessplus.iastate.edu/frontdoor/login.jsp.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

You have just a few days left to spend your 2012 flexible spending account (FSA) dollars.  All 2012 FSA expenses for health and dependent care must be incurred by December 31, 2012.  This is a use it or lose it situation.  Iowa State's FSA administrator is ASIFlex and claim forms are available on the ASIFlex website at http://isu.asiflex.com/default.html.  Claims for 2012 must be filed by April 30, 2013.

Licenses/Certifications

Should you need to renew a specific license or certification for 2013, please remember to do so by placing a reminder on your calendar at this time.  If your job requires a particular license or certification, you are expected to keep it valid at all times.

Ames Lab Human Resources wishes you a safe and healthy new year.  Get ready to start writing 2013!
